Sailors Espresso

Grand finals time for Junior Hockey

Saturday September 10 sees a huge line up of

to be played. After 2 years of no finals due to COVID restrictions, there will be some very excited and nervous players taking to the turf on Saturday.

The Div 2 girls open the day at 10am with an all-out storm predicted, as Sailors Thunder take on Sailors Lightning. Sailors Thunder have been the dominant team throughout the season, but the last time these teams met there was only one goal difference so expect Lightning to put up a good fight in this grand final.

In Div 1, minor premiers Sailors Espresso will face a determined Southies, who are coming off the back of a strong finals win against McAuley. These teams have played each other 15 times this season, so should know each other’s games inside out. The odds favour Sailors but Southies have the potential to pull off an upset in their game at 11.20am.

City Bears Big River Pizza

City Bears Big River Pizza and Royals Raiders will meet in Under 11s at 12.40. These teams played the major semi-final, with Royals just scraping through with a 1-0 win, so expect another very tight game that could go either way.

Under 13s will hit off at 2pm, with another City Bears v Royals game. Again, these teams fought out the major semi, with Royals Rangers winning 1-0. Bears Green had a convincing win in the final to secure their grand final spot. Head to heads in the round games have these teams on equal pegging. There are lots of talented players, but it will be the team that can maintain a good passing game that will take the win.

City Bears Elders

The headliner match for the day will be the Under 16 Premier Division with Royals Jets taking on City Bears Elders at 3.20. Bears have played well leading into the grand final with 5 wins on the trot, but the consistency of Royals will be hard to overcome. With the modified 9 a side format, spectators can be guaranteed some high quality fast paced hockey.

Good luck to all the players and officials participating on Saturday and thank you to all the volunteers behind the scenes who make our Junior Hockey competition run so smoothly. Why not head down to the Hockey on Saturday and enjoy the day?
