Grafton Shoppingworld Senior Sportsperson for the Month of March: Ben McMahon

Harwood Cricket Club all-rounder Ben McMahon is the Grafton Shoppingworld Senior Sportsperson of the Month for March.

Carrying a famous surname in the Lower Clarence cricket scene, the 27-year-old all-rounder has been a leading figure of the Harwood’s Premier League outfit for a decade.

Now a regular selection for the North Coastal, Ben played a starring role for the representative side as their leading run scorer at the 2022-23 NSW Country Open Championships in Tamworth.

After scores of 20 and 43 earlier in the tournament, he scored 68 in his side’s total of nine for 232 against eventual champions Newcastle, who then slumped to be all out for 101 in reply, with Ben taking two catches.

It was North Coastal’s first victory over the perennial heavyweights at the annual tournament.

Ben also represented the Coffs Coast Chargers who reached the semi-finals of the NSW Regional Big Bash Twenty20 tournament, going down to Central West Wranglers in the semi-final at North Sydney Oval.

Closer to home for Harwood, Ben top scored with 55 and took four for 39 in a nail-biting 34-run preliminary final win over Northern Districts Rebels to reach the North Coast Premier League grand-final against Valleys.

The premiership was awarded to minor premiers Valleys after the decider was cut short by wet weather.

Next week, the Junior Sportsperson of the Month for April will be announced.
