A rather small contingent of members arrived for competition at the South Grafton swimming pool last Tuesday week. Illness, injury and holidays can account for this, but Captain Damien was undeterred and arranged a program of three heats.
The feature event was the Wykes’ Tyrepower cup for the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly competition. Contenders for the cup were Yvonne Shorrock, Andrew Madden, Damien O’Mahony and David Moon. Yvonne, who had swum really fast all evening, was first home but was disqualified with a break of almost 4 seconds. The same fate awaited Andrew and Marno. Moony, the only one to swim within his nominated time, was awarded the cup for April.
The finalists for the 25-metre freestyle were Geoff Simkus, Richard Sear, Steve Donnelly and David Moon. The race was over in the blink of an eye, but unfortunately Richard and Steve both broke their times, and suffered the dreaded disqualifications. Moony was first with an excellent time, and Geoff took the points for second. Well done to Moony, with two wins for the night!
The 50-metre freestyle final saw Geoff Simkus, Terry Marsh, Steve Donnelly and Adam Pearce line up to race. Marshy was first home and was awarded the win, with Steve second, and Geoff third. Adam is still perfecting his times, and as a strong swimmer he is sure to be in the winners’ circle before long.
The GDSC Swimming Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations will be held at the South pool and the Grafton District Services’ Club on Sunday June 26. Past members of the club will be most welcome to join us. Former members, if you would like to know more, please contact us through the Facebook group. We would love to have you!
