GDSC bowlers win Whoopi tournament

Unfortunately, I must begin this week’s news on a sad note. Last week our club lost one of its life members in Ken O’Meara. Ken was one of the clubs’ real stalwarts and was instrumental in beginning our Tuesday Night Bowls many years ago at our old club at Kemp.

He also helped many many new bowlers on their bowling journey and made sure they began on the right path to a successful bowling career…his contribution to our club over many many years will always be remembered and we pass on our deepest sympathies to his family and friends…R.I.P. champion.

On a much brighter note, many congratulations to our team of Mark Walsh, Alan Gough and Leith Basset who last week contested the Woolgoolga RSL Bowling Clubs ‘Bowling Arm’ tournament. Each team entered had at least two players using a bowling arm but were permitted to have the third player playing in the normal manner, however the third player was only allowed to play in the ‘lead’ position. Our boys not only won all three games but were successful in winning the tournament. Well done guys.

In social bowls results, we had 38 bowlers keen to ‘roll them down’ on Wednesday May 18 for our social pairs, with the winners on the day being Brian Napper, Paul Sutton & Tony Blanch; runners up were Bill James & Rob Power, while the consolation prize was won by Neil Payne & Alan Gough. The ‘First Resting Toucher’ prizes were won by Ben Gaardsted on green 1 and Keith Garner on green 2.

On Friday May 20 we had 48 players for our social pairs with the winners B. Stone & Greg Taylor; runners up went to Des Clarke & Tony Lickiss, and our consolation prize was won by K. Wright & S. Wood. The ‘First Resting Touchers’ were won by Gary Ahrens on green 1 & Des Clarke on green 2 and our three ‘free game winners’ were Ken Ainsworth, Neville Henwood & Neil Payne.

Our Saturday afternoon mixed bowls which we have played the last two Saturdays will be on again this Saturday. Last Saturday we had five rinks of pairs which was enjoyed by all who attended, so bring your husbands & wives along for a fun afternoon.

Place your names on the sheet which will be on the notice board this week… see you there as this format will only be played until our Club Triples Championship start in a couple of weeks’ time.

A reminder that nominations for our Club Triples Championship are still open, so if you haven’t already done so, get your teams together and nominate ASAP…at this stage our match committee has not set a date for the first-round matches, so keep an eye on the notice board.

See you on the greens soon at the GDSC.
