Maclean Vets ‘Week of Golf’

The Maclean Vets have just completed a very successful ‘Week of Golf. We had 90 starters all up with golfers coming from all over NSW and up the Queensland coast and despite threatening weather conditions at times, especially towards the end of the week, we managed to get through all events without too much interruption or discomfort.

Monday’s event was a mystery 2BBB and the winners were Kevin O’Brien (Howlong) and Steven Craven (Ballina) with a combined score of 74 points.

Tuesday’s event was a Single Stableford with winners in three grades for both men and women.

Div 1: winners for the men – Ken Hines 36pts; Div 2 – William McGregor 37pts; Div 3 – Gordon Fletcher 36pts.

Div 1: winners the ladies – Wendy Thompson 31pts; Div 2 – Meg Grady 32 pts; Div 3 – Jackie Wheeler 39pts.

Thursday was another Stableford event with Kevin O’Brien winning Div1 with 36pts; Gary Sutcliffe took out Div 2 with 35pts and Gordon Whitby cleaned up in Div 3 with 36pts.

The ladies Div 1 winner was Meg Grady 30pts; Div 2 – Lynne Woodward 31pts and in Div 3 Aileen Williams took the money with 33pts.

Friday’s game was a 2BBB which was won Ken Hines and Steve Messiter with 4pts. They won in a countback from John and Marie Tallis.

The luncheon and presentation were held in the Maclean Bowling Club where Aileen Williams, Secretary of NSW Vets presented the shields to the two winners of the NSWVGA 36-hole Stableford event. This was a combination of the Tuesday and Thursday Stableford scores and generally goes to the most consistent golfers on the two days. This year the winners were a husband-and-wife team of Alan Holley and Tereza Holley (Noosa Springs). Alan finished with a combined score of 71 and Tereza had a combined score of 64. Congratulations to both Alan and Tereza on their victories at Maclean.

You can’t have a successful WOG without an excellent team of volunteers and without great sponsors. Thankfully, we had both. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped in one way or another over the whole week to ensure that the golf ran smoothly each day.

Also, a very sincere thank you and appreciation to all our sponsors who are listed here: Clarence Valley Council, Maclean Bowling Club, Marline and Graham Roberts, Botero Coffee, Maclean Stays, Maclean Golf Club, Spar Supermarket, Maclean Hotel, Manildra Sugar Mill and the Lower Clarence Fishing Co-Op. We couldn’t run this event without you.

Next Monday is our monthly medal and barbecue day.
