Saturday January 22 saw the final eight teams contest the quarter finals in our Major Fours Championship for 2022.
The first quarter final saw the team of Chris Lawler, Gary Cross, Trevor Want (sub for Ray Marchant) and John Hall (Skip), do battle with Mitch Cook, Des Clarke, Ron Piggott and Keith Garner (skip).
Keith Garner’s team began well, winning six of the first seven ends to lead 8 – 1 before John Halls boys hit back with four shots over the next two ends to narrow the margin to three shots (8 – 5) after nine ends, however Garner’s men got busy over the next three ends scoring 6 shots to lead 14 shots to 5 after twelve ends…John’s team picked up 3 on the thirteenth end to trail 8 – 14, but it was Garner’s boys who finished the better to record an eleven shot victory.
Final score: Keith Garner 23 d John Hall 12.
The second quarter final matched the teams of Kevin Blanch, Leith Basset, Ken Ainsworth, and skip Ray Toovey (R2V) against Terry Glass, Gwill Samuel, Paul Goratschow, and skip Neville Henwood.
Toovey’s boys got the jump on ‘Neville’s Warriors’ winning seven of the first ten ends to lead 12 – 5 at the halfway mark. From that point on it was Ray Toovey and team who grabbed the match by the ‘scruff of the neck’ winning six of the last seven ends to prove just too good on the day.
Final score: Ray Toovey 30 d Neville Henwood 8.
In quarter final number three we saw Bob Tierney, Ken Foster, Craig Dalton and Tony Dalton (skip) up against Matty Shorten, Peter Gillespie, Gregg Maxted and skip Ken Landrigan (Sleepy).
Sleepy’s team won the first three ends to open up a 5 – 0 lead, however Tony and team hit back in a big way winning the next five ends to take the lead 7 – 5 followed by singles on three of the next four ends to lead 10 – 6 after 12 ends. Ken took two shots on the thirteenth end to trail by 2 shots 8 – 10, but Tony came again with four shots over the next two ends to open a six-shot lead 14 – 8 with 6 ends to play.
Sleepy’s boys were not about to go away though and picked up four shots on the 16th end and singles on the following three ends, to take the lead 15 – 14 with two ends to play.
With the game on the line, it was Tony’s men who struck a crutial blow with 3 shots on the 20th end and followed it with 2 shots on the final end for a four-shot win.
Final score: Tony Dalton 19 d Ken Landrigan 15.
The fourth and final quarter final was between Gary Gumbleton, Neil Payne, Jason Ryan and skip Greg (Squizzy) Taylor, who fought it out with Barry Elder, Gary Harrison, Robby Power and skip Allan Knox.
This game saw Allan Knox and team begin with a ‘bang’ to lead 12 – 1 after five ends, incuding five shots on end two, followed by four shots on end 4. Squizzy and team added two singles on the following two ends to trail 3 – 12, but apart from the 15th end where they scored 2 shots to trail 9 – 17. Squizzy and his boys were only able to score single shots and were unable to recover from the early eleven shot deficit. Allan and team finished the game winners by 13 shots.
Final score: Allan Knox 24 d Greg Taylor 11.
In other mid week social pairs results, we had 38 players on Wednesday January 19 with the winning pair being Ivan Beverley and Harold Gibson; the runners up on the day were Bob Tierney and Tony Dalton, while our consolation prize went to Peter Madden and Allan Gough.
Our two ‘first resting toucher’ prizes were won by Arthur Graham and Gary Ahrens, both of which played on Green 1. There were no resting touchers on Green 2.
On Friday January 21 there were 48 players with us, and the winning team on the day was Neil Payne and Allan Gough; runners up went to Ken Landrigan and Neville Henwood, and yes… Neville said: “It makes a big difference when you have a top lead like Sleepy…. The consolation prize was won by Arthur Graham and Darren Brown. Our two ‘first resting toucher’ prizes went to Kevin Blanch on Green 1 and John Hall on Green 2.
