Lawrence Loves… a community arts festival

Lawrence Community Fundraising Inc. – a group of community volunteers, passionate about contributing positive change and serving their local community needs – is delighted to announce a community arts festival on Saturday May 25.

LCF Inc President, Jenna Thompson said, “Lawrence Loves… is a way of shining a light on aspects of village life that contribute to its identity. We’re focusing on three tried and tested ways of bringing people together: through food, performing arts and ceremony.”

“We’re inviting residents of Lawrence and surrounding areas to rediscover our village through participating in workshops and joining us in May for a riverside lantern parade.”

The project is funded by the Yulgilbar Foundation and comprises a series of free arts and craft workshops, culminating in a one-day festival.

The main event will feature a collection of exhibits showcasing the arts, craft and pastimes of Lawrence locals. Attendees can also join in ‘Sconversations’ with the CWA, enjoy kangaroo & bush tucker burgers on the BBQ, kids’ outdoor games, a lantern parade, a dazzling fire show and live music all day.

Master lantern maker Phill Relf of Ikara Celebtratory Events, who previously orchestrated the parade at the popular Riverlight Ulmarra event in May 2022, returns to run lantern-making workshops ahead of the main event.

He said, “for Lawrence Loves… we’ll be building a giant model of the iconic Lawrence Ferry. It’s a task that requires hands on input from the community and requires no previous experience or skills. All welcome.”

Students at Lawrence Public and Pre-schools will participate in workshops, scheduled for the beginning of Term 2, to create individual lanterns, as well as papier maché fish to decorate the festival site.

Workshops coordinator, Robyn Martyn said, “the public workshops kicked off back in September and have been really well attended. All workshops are free of charge. Participants can have yarn while learning new skills.”

“Numbers are limited though, so please check our website for dates and call the number listed to register.”
