Wonder why it floods in Yamba

Ed,

Let me enlighten the local community… I have been a plumber for over 50 years, and I decided to check where our storm water from our houses and the grated drains from the kerb and gutter terminated. All Harold Tory Drive and O’Gradys Lane terminated into the bush or paddock at our rear.

The new subdivision on Carrs Drive discharges into existing wetlands which ends up going under Carrs Drive, discharging into a ditch behind O’Gradys Lane, there it flows down to Golding Street, so you have all of Harold Tory Drive, O’Gradys Lane, and the new subdivisions stormwater all discharging into a ditch adjacent to where the 50km speed zone signs are behind O’Gradys Lane on Carrs Drive.

There are no stormwater pipes at all to take any stormwater away.

The new subdivision will contribute to more flooding, once all the houses are finished with all the roofs and road discharging stormwater. The new subdivision should be made to discharge all stormwater back into Oyster Channel. The developer is liable for any alterations to the storm water. There are 3 – 600mm diameter pipes coming from the new subdivision discharging into wetlands and then 2 – 600mm pipes under Carrs Drive.

It would not be a problem to dam up adjacent to where the 3 pipes are and dig a ditch back towards Oyster Channel.

Again, there are not stormwater pipes at all on Carrs Drive.

Who approves these developments with no stormwater infrastructure while building on a floodplain?

Mark Mills, Yamba
