A teenager has been charged following a two-vehicle crash on the state’s North Coast yesterday.

About 8.10am (Thursday 2 March 2023), emergency services were called to the intersection of Oliver Street and Clarence Street, Grafton, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Police from Coffs-Clarence Police District attended the scene and found a Toyota Kluger SUV and Isuzu tipper truck had collided.

A male passenger of the SUV, aged 15, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a serious leg injury. He was transported to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital, before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the SUV, a 16-year-old boy, and front-seat passenger, a 19-year-old man, allegedly fled the scene, but were located nearby and the driver was arrested following a short foot pursuit.

The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old man, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital for further treatment.

A crime scene was established with specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, police charged the 16-year-old boy with eight offences, including:

aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm,

dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm,

cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle,

take and drive conveyance without consent of owner,

negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm),

fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm,

never licensed person drive vehicle on road – prior offence, and

aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence-people there.

He was refused bail to appear before a Children’s Court today (Friday 3 March 2023).
