Ed,
The road into Yamba is barely above sea level at high tide, and apparently, the sea covers low-lying sections of the road during king high tides. There is also only one road into Yamba, which is a major risk if there is some sort of natural or man-made disaster.
Imagine if you will a very large tsunami heading for the east coast from a large undersea earthquake in the Pacific (like the one that smashed Japan a few years ago).
Imagine all the residents in low-lying sections of Yamba jumping in their cars and trying to get out of town in a hurry, on the only road, which is less than half a metre above sea level. It would make for a great disaster movie.
With the rate of climate change accelerating, with resultant sea level rises, Clarence Valley Council needs to start raising the road into Yamba by half a metre at least – preferably by a metre, NOW!
It also needs to very quickly build a second access road into Yamba. Barring this, all the residents of Yamba need to own a boat and a good pair of gum boots.
