Police cars rammed at Iluka

Two men have been arrested and charged following a pursuit in an allegedly stolen car from Ballina to Iluka that ended when two police cars were rammed.

Officers from the Richmond Police District Highway Patrol attempted to stop an allegedly stolen Ford Focus on the M1 Motorway at West Ballina, about 12.20am on Thursday, March 14.

When the vehicle failed to stop as directed by police a pursuit was initiated which continued south along the motorway to Iluka, where the Ford Focus allegedly rammed two police vehicles before it came to a stop.

The two men in the car, the 22-year-old driver and his 16-year-old passenger, were arrested nearby with the assistance of a police dog and taken to Grafton Police Station.

Police said the driver was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a dog bite sustained during his arrest.

The 22-year-old man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, never licensed person drive vehicle on road, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc, and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

He appeared before Grafton Local Court on Thursday, March 14 where he was refused bail to appear before the same court on Monday 18 March 2024.

The 16-year-old boy was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and intentionally throw object at vehicle/vessel risk safety.

He was refused bail and appeared before a children’s court on Thursday, March 14, where he was granted conditional bail to appear before the same court on Friday 12 April 2024.
