1 in 5 children have an undetected vision condition. Most adapt to poor vision, believing it’s normal, but early detection is crucial for their development. The LIONS EYE HEALTH PROGRAM (LEHP) uses screening aids and cameras to identify vision issues through four simple activities on-site.
Things that are tested are visual acuity using symbols on a chart, depth perception wearing 3-d glasses, and colour vision. The portable spot vision camera is used to screen Myopia (near sightedness), Hyperopia (far sightedness), Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisocoria (unequal pupil size), and Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), and Strabismus (eye misalignment).
Parents are provided with individualised and confidential results, confirming their child’s vision is within normal range or whether any potential issues were identified. For those needing further assessment it is recommended that their child visit an Optometrist for a full eye examination.
Maclean Lions need Vision Screeners and Facilitators in Lower Clarence Valley. Volunteers undergo LEHP training, including an online course, hands-on workshop, and screening session. You don’t need to be a Lion; we just need volunteers with (or willing to obtain) a Working with Children clearance to provide free vision screenings.
Starting in 2025, Maclean Lions and other Lions clubs will roll out eye health testing throughout the participating schools in the Lower Clarence Valley. Regular eye exams are essential for all children to detect vision problems early and support their development.
