Lock up your cars, homes in Yamba

A recent crime spree which saw two cars stolen and one burnt out on the same night in Yamba has prompted a warning from police to lock up your cars and homes to prevent opportunistic crimes.

On the night of Monday, May 1, two cars were stolen, and others broken into and rifled through on Orion Drive, Bayview Crescent, and Kallatina Place.

A Jeep four-wheel-drive was stolen from Kallatina Place and a small hatchback was stolen from another nearby residence and left burnt out near the intersection of Orion Drive and Yamba Road, leaving it indistinguishable.

Fire and Rescue NSW Yamba Brigade were called to Orion Drive at 12.48am on Tuesday, May 2, after reports of a car on fire.

Police were already attendance when they arrived to find a small car well alight.

Two fire fighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the fire but the car was extensively destroyed.

A resident of Orion Drive confirmed to the Clarence Valley Independent their car had been searched and phone charging cords stolen on the night of the thefts.

Police doorknocked the area on Tuesday, May 2, to warn residents to lock up their cars, homes, and to secure valuables following the thefts, as local statistics show a large percentage of crimes committed are due to people leaving cars, windows, and doors unlocked, providing easy access for criminals to steal property from homes and vehicles.
