Burglaries and break ins on the rise in Grafton

Grafton residents are being urged to be vigilant amidst an increase in burglaries and break ins during the summer period.

Coffs Clarence Police District Chief Inspector Joanne Reid said a number of thefts have recently occurred in residential dwellings and business facilities.

Vehicles are also being targeted with a majority of offences committed by opportunistic thieves.

Chief Inspector Reid revealed several instances of thefts from vehicles could have been avoided with a number of owners leaving their vehicles unlocked with valuables inside.

She warned many thefts from vehicles also result in fraudulent incidents where the thief uses a stolen credit card or identity.

Chief Inspector Reid is strongly encouraging residents in the Grafton area to lock their vehicles and secure their homes and businesses to help reduce crime in the local community.

“Many victims are also surprised to learn that their insurance company doesn’t cover theft from vehicles,” she said.

“While Police have made a number of arrests and thieves have been identified by way of fingerprint and DNA evidence, prevention and deterrence are essential to safeguarding your home and possessions.”

Chief Inspector Reid is also encouraging Grafton residents to continue to report suspicious persons and behaviour to Grafton Police on 66 420 222, CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
