Strong southerly for sailors’ handicap round

Yet another southerly graced the shores of the Clarence for a regular handicap round on Saturday.

It seems to be the pattern this season with the southerly being the dominant wind. The breeze was quite light as we were all arriving at the club, but come midday, the wind was continuing to pick up to 10-15 knots which deterred some of the boats with bigger sail areas. The gusty conditions added to the challenges of the racing, but no one was complaining.

Conditions were prime for the fast-reaching Impulse fleet, and they were able to dominate the monohulls, with Rick not far behind Scooter and best overall on handicap. Neil, on his sailboard, reveled in the strong winds scoring a first and second in the two races and Nathan, Brian and Dave battling it out somewhat closely in the multi-hull division after Nathan’s main sheet briefly came undone.

Results

Mono hulls: Race 1- Rick Chalmers, Neil Hayes, James Harrison. Race 2- Neil Hayes, Rick Chalmers, Gus Young. Multi Hulls: Race 1-Nathan Stanton, Dave Bailey, Brian Linnett. Race 2- Brian Linnett.

Preparations are in place for the Annual Regatta on the weekend of February 25-26. It will be all hands-on deck with sailors coming from around the state and interstate to compete in a highly anticipated event.

We also have a “Try Sailing” day on February 11 from 10am.  This is for kids and adults and a free event. No experience or gear required. Sailing lessons are on most Saturday mornings at 10am. All welcome.
