The Maclean Bowling Club Bobcats FC return to the FFNC Women’s Premier League this season was a successful one culminating with star striker Rachael Anderson being selected in the Women’s Premier League Team of the Year. The 27-year-old goal machine was selected at centre forward after racking up 16 goals this year, but there is much more to this story than just this year.
Rachael is a second-generation Bobcat following in the footsteps of her mother Natalie who was a founding member of Maclean FC’s women’s team back in 1992. Natalie was also one of the most outstanding players in the region and was twice named FFNC Player of the Year in 1998 and in 2001. So, Rachael is following in her mother’s footsteps these days, picking up this prestigious individual award in football but it didn’t always look that way as she played netball until she was 16. Both mother and daughter had a few seasons playing together which was a wonderful experience for them and equally for the Maclean side having two such high quality players combining on the pitch each week.
Tributes have been flowing from former coaches who coached both ladies at various stages of their careers. Former coach Col Stephens said “Both are natural athletes and are hard trainers always looking to improve their game. Nat was more than just a skilful player, she was our captain, an ambassador for our club and respected by all she played with and against. It’s great to see Rach achieving similar and well-deserved success as well.” Current coach Wayne Sutton echoed Stephen’s sentiments stating “Both a talented, skilful and prolific goal scorer. What Nat provided in cunning, game smarts and experience, Rachel provides in power, strength and speed. Nat could play anywhere, including goalkeeper, where Rach is an out and out striker. The Bobcats have been very fortunate to have these two stars at our club and at times on the park together.”
To be selected in the Team of the Year is quite an achievement for Rachael and requires her to impress many people. Referees vote each week for the best players on the ground and all the coaches are also asked to nominate who they believe is the best team of the year, so such individual recognition requires sustained strong performances all season. Maclean FC would like to congratulate Rachael on an outstanding season.
