Unwanted by the punters, locally trained galloper Boyles loomed at the top of the home straight and turned his recent form around with a solid win in the 2021 Maclean Bowling Club Maclean Cup on the final day of the 2021 July Racing Carnival.

Despite starting at odds of 30/1, Boyles relished the return to his home track and hit the line powerfully under jockey Allan Chau to win the feature event from another 30/1 shot Prima Stella.

Rexx finished third at 15/1 while race favourite Getyourgreyon from the Michael Costa stable plodded past the post in eighth place.

Winning trainer Scott Henley was delighted with his galloper following the race, and described Boyles as a tough and honest competitor.

“He loves it here (Grafton),” he said.

“He loves the distance, he loves the track, and he’s really come on since Doomben the other day.

“His coats come through and he just bloomed the last seven days going into the race.”

While Boyles received further praise from his jockey, Chau also gratefully acknowledged the horse’s trainer and connections for giving him the ride.

He also acknowledged the CRJC and race sponsors following the event and said he enjoyed being a part of the 2021 July Racing Carnival.

“There couldn’t be a better place to ride a winner,” he said happily.

A five-year-old gelding by Excelebration (IRE), Boyles has won five of his 29 race starts and over $125000 in prizemoney.

As Henley enjoyed a well-earned celebratory drink with the happy owners following the race, including long-time stable supporter Graham, he revealed Boyles will be aimed at the Kosciuszko on October 16 at Randwick.
