Tens of thousands of Mardi Gras revellers witnessed Northern River local Leah Benson’s talent, as she unveiled her costume designs at the iconic Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. Ms Benson holds one of the industry’s most sought-after roles, Head of Costume for the world-renowned parade.
The demand for Fashion Designers in Australia is projected to increase by 28.4 per cent by 2026. 1 For those looking to enter the growing industry, Leah credits her studies at TAFE NSW for leading her on a trailblazing path to success.
“In terms of career moves, studying at TAFE NSW was the best thing I ever did. My Certificate III in Fashion Design gave me the knowledge and skills to explore any career path within the fashion trade,” said Ms Benson.
“I was employed in an entry-level fashion role shortly after I completed the course. Through this, I had the opportunity to design and make a dress for the workshop manager of the Mardi Gras, and she offered me a job.
“I’ve now worked my way up to be the Head of Costume. It may have been a chance encounter, but I wouldn’t have had these opportunities without the hands-on design skills I learnt throughout my studies and lots of hard work along the way.”
Now in her ninth year as Head of Costume, Ms Benson’s mark on the fashion industry continues to expand. She’s established her own label, LeLash, along the NSW North Coast, created costumes for Network 10’s The Masked Singer, and is the creative talent behind the NSW Waratahs’ newest mascot.
Ms Benson said honing practical skills and love of the craft is critical to success in the Fashion industry. “Gaining practical skills and networking is important, and I’m living proof that keeping at your craft can lead you to the role of your dreams.”
