Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has become a symbol of solidarity and support for men’s health that’s grown to transcend borders and changed the face of men’s health forever. Supporters across the globe put down their razors, embrace their growing moustaches, and unite in the annual movement to spark millions of important conversations, raise vital funds and continue to advocate for improvements to men’s health.
‘Mo’s’ and their supporters raise crucial awareness and life-saving funds for men’s health, from mental health and suicide prevention to prostate and testicular cancer. The moustache becomes more than just a hairy upper lip — it’s transformed into a powerful statement for change, a walking, talking billboard for men’s health.
For the past 21 years, the world’s leading men’s health charity has continued to push the boundaries of medical science through innovative and unconventional approaches to improving and rethinking men’s health services. This year, Movember has made significant progress in changing the face of men’s health, launching its first-ever Men’s Health Report and advocacy campaign through the Real Face of Men’s Health to highlight the far-reaching impact and ripple effect a man in poor health can have on his family and community.
Recognising that Indigenous men remain disproportionately affected by poor physical and mental health, the organisation proudly announced a global investment of AUD 59.5 million into Indigenous health. With a significant AUD 17.61 going directly into First Nations communities and organisations across Australia and New Zealand over the next seven years. The funding will deliver tailored health strategies focused on social and emotional well-being.
Additionally, the Movember Institute of Men’s Health has partnered with the Australian Government, pledging AUD 3.2 million towards an initiative aimed at tackling gender-based violence by advancing initiatives to promote a healthy culture of masculinities that supports men to form better social connections, encourages early recognition of poor mental health, improves mental health discussion and overall promotes healthy behaviours.
Among the 6 million Mo’s who Grow, Move and Host, is 2024 AFL Mark of the Year winner, testicular cancer survivor and Movember Ambassador Bobby Hill, who says “It’s an honour to be part of a long-standing legacy, raising awareness of the mental and physical struggles faced by men and the impact it has on the wider community. It is vital to value your health and ask for help. Not only will you be taking the lead on your own health, but you can inspire other men to do the same.”
Movember’s CEO Michelle Terry said “In Australia, men are more likely to die from preventable causes like suicide, to engage in high-risk behaviours such as substance misuse, and to experience social isolation. They often have poorer health literacy than women, making them less likely to seek preventative healthcare when needed. These factors contribute to a culture of poor physical and mental health among Australian boys and men.
“At Movember, we are committed to tackling these issues head-on with proactive health initiatives that empower men to take charge of their health and seek support when needed. You can help change the face of men’s health by signing up at movember.com. Together, we can create a healthier world for men, their families, and their communities. Remember, every moustache can start a conversation, and every donation saves lives.”
Since its inception, the Melbourne-born charity has raised over AUD 1.5 billion, funding more than 1,300 men’s health initiatives globally. These projects challenge the status quo and are transforming how men and clinicians approach physical and mental health.
Together, we can continue to raise the profile of men’s health and demonstrate it’s worthy of attention.
