New campaign urges people to get ‘boat ready’ ahead of the Easter break

Transport for NSW has launched a new safety advertising campaign across radio, print and digital media targeting boaters planning to get out on the water over the Easter break.

Deputy Secretary for Safety Environment and Regulation Tara McCarthy said the ‘Are you boat ready?’ campaign was aimed at both new and experienced boaters and was being launched ahead of a Maritime weekend blitz targeting boating safety after recent extreme weather.

“After all the bad weather we’ve had across the state recently, we know people will be keen to get out on the water this Easter break, which is great, but we want to make sure they plan their trip, prepare everything that is needed and predict what might happen, “ Ms McCarthy said.

“Although they have plenty of experience, boaters aged 70 and above are over-represented in recreational boating fatalities, accounting for 27 per cent, over the 10-year period to June 2021, despite holding only 8.6 per cent of boat licences.

“We are rolling out advertising to reach this group initially  regional radio, print and on digital platforms then television later this year.

“Even the most experienced boaters face unexpected risks on the water, which is why you need to check the weather forecast, make sure you’ve got the right gear, including the correct life jacket, make sure you understand and know how to manage common on water risks and lastly, know your limits.”

Tara McCarthy said the campaign is a reminder to exercise good judgement and take the necessary precautions.

“NSW has a terrific boating community, and we love seeing people enjoying our beautiful waterways, but we need to ensure everyone, no matter how experienced, can enjoy this popular pastime in the safest possible way.

“We’re working towards the reducing the number of lives lost, with our ultimate goal being to have zero fatalities on NSW waterways by 2056.”

Boaters should Log On with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16 or the Marine Rescue app before heading out. Marine Rescue volunteers will watch out for your safe return and if you don’t Log Off as planned, start searching for you.
