Yamba Women’s Bowls honour President Bev

Thursday June 30 was a special day in honour of our President Bev Shatte at our Club, starting with a delicious morning tea and then a fun game of bowls, again followed by a lunch in Bev’s honour.

33 ladies lined up for the day’s events – starting with a “spider” followed by a friendly game of bowls.

President Bev played the role of swinger in the team with M. Stone, G. Davis and C. Aitchison and rightly took the winner’s prize for the day after defeating B. Shatte, J. Stamp, R. McPherson, J. Button.

Good to see Secretary Joan back on the green again and in the winning side with B. Backshall and M. Jenner defeating M. Partridge (v), J. Abbott and K. Mason (who took home the Consolation prize). Runners-up were L. McLean, G. Freeman, W. Ballantyne d P. McKenna, M. Abbott, C. Ritale.

After the presentation of prizes and jackpot drawn but not won, it was on to the Riverboat Room for lunch.

The day was capably emceed by Wendy Ballantyne who kept the order of the day running smoothly.

Also, Wendy contributed the special placemats and programmes for the occasion. And with the assistance of husband Bob produced a collage of photos of Bev’s years at the Club on the big screen for all to enjoy.

Heartfelt thank must also go to the Cheryl (and Maz) for setting up for the day and also to Julie and Lucy Coulter for the wonderful decorations and gifts for the tables.

Special guests were Sandra Ferro, Life Members Lyn Olsson and Shirley Drum, Don and Gabby Freeman and Bob Ballantyne.

First up the day’s raffles were drawn followed by a presentation to Bev by Vice-Presidents Lois Duncan and Judy Pryor.

Then a gift from the District was presented by Robyn McPherson representing District President Denise McLachlan who sadly was unable to attend due to illness.

Life Member Shirley Drum also payed tribute to Bev.

President Bev has held this position for three long years – through the topsy-turvy months of COVID and the changing times of the future of women’s bowls.

Bev has always conducted her role with dignity and wisdom and a sound knowledge of “what’s going on” – handling the smooth running of the Club with the aplomb of a true leader.

Bev then spoke of her years at the Club and of her gratitude to all who had given her great assistance over the years.

The day ended with the cutting of the special cake, and all agreed that it was a lovely day and a fitting tribute to a wonderful President.
