Yamba Women’s Bowls

Tuesday July 23

Although numbers were down a little due to several of our members attending the Iluka Triples, we still managed to field two rinks of triples and three of pairs. A brilliant day for bowls and with our greens running beautifully (thanks to our wonderful greenkeepers) – there were some well-fought battles and some great shots played.

The winners for the day were G.L. Davis, S. Graham, and G. Davis who had a close tussle with M. Sakac, L. Johnston (v), and J. Pryor. Runners-up and consolation prizes came out on the same rink with V. Pate, L. Asbury taking the big money by defeating R. Dickson, P. Sehestedt (v) who took home the consolation dollars.

There were two more pairs games with F. Monk (v), M. Abbott d W. Bell, M. Thompson and L. Bourke (v) J. Button d B. Cross, C. Ritale. Lastly another triples game completed the field with S. Lindsay, A. Cook (vb), J. Campbell d. J. Stamp, V. Beddow, N. Smith.

Thursday July 25

After a long break finally the ‘Queen of the Green’ competition continued and it was Chris Cole defending her crown against the might of the in-form Judy Abbott. Now we all know that Chris is hard to beat when she’s on her game – a highly respected bowler in our Club and it was a marvellous game which ensued. Chris jumped out of the trap with a 3 on the first end but Judy played great bowls in reply and on the 18th end it was 16 all. But from that point Judy kept her nose in front with great conversions and super draw shots.

Final result saw Judy crowned new Queen with the score 25-19. Marker was Maria Sakac. Judy piled on the rewards by taking out the runners-up prize to boot.

The weather was a little threatening but 20 bowlers played on until the showers ended the morning a little early. But the two games of triples and two of pairs managed to get in a couple of hours play with the results being.

Winners for the day the pairs game of J. Coulter, R. Fletcher d P. Conley, C. Ritale; and for consolation prize L. Bourke (v), S. Lindsay, N. Smith fell afoul of P. Hicks (v), I. Neill, B. Shatte; Also P. Stevens (v), L. Duncan, J. Pryor d G. L. Davis, F. Monk(v), L. Asbury. Also in pairs there was a draw between A. Cook (v), R. Dickson and M. Abbott, G. Davis – the latter winning on a countback.

Major/Minors commenced on Saturday August 3 (not July 27 as reported) and don’t forget your team for Blue Pacific Fours commencing on Monday August 26. The final Club Fours was played on Tuesday July 30.

The Jackpot has finally been won and it was the lucky Ros Dickson and her rink who took home a healthy $180.
