Yamba Trawlers Basketball

It was another busy weekend for the Yamba Basketball Association with the Senior men’s team taking on the Casino outfit. Yamba Trawlers had a handful of the senior players out, this allowed the opportunity to for our under 18’s to be included into the team, but managed to come away with another convincing win. The Trawlers started with a 3 point shot by Christian Whittaker and the energy from the young Trawlers side continued with Yamba going into the break with a 17 to 13 point lead. The second quarter was much the same with Whittaker continuing the scoring finishing with 19 for the half, along with Bill Bolte, Jack Roberts-Field, Jed Mitchell, Peter Laurie, all contributing to go into the half 37 points to 24. The good lead allowed all Trawler players to get a lot of court time which will be helpful for gaining valuable experience. The third quarter was much the same with Yamba winning the quarter 18 to 13, to go into the 4th quarter 55 points to 37. The last quarter saw Casino drop four three pointers to contribute to a 28 point last quarter. All Yamba players contributed to the win and despite relaxing defensively in the last quarter, the scoring rate continued. Christian Whitaker finished with 28 points and Jack Roberts-field having 24 points. The Junior Trawlers continued in the North Coast Shield last Sunday with the under 14 boys and under 18 boys travelling to Lismore for the round of games. Playing three games each the 14 boys came away with wins all games and coach Garbi Croft was very proud with the results and efforts from all players. The under 18 men managed the one win out of the three games and all games were very close. This weekend the Trawler men’s team is away to Casino and all our junior teams have earned a weekend off and will be ready to play in Yamba August 19. The Trawler men’s next home game in Yamba will be against the fancied Byron Bay side on August 25 and will be Yamba’s biggest test so far. Steve Smith
