Yamba Rod Run draws a crowd

Lynne Mowbray | The streets of Yamba were awash with colour on Saturday as hundreds of hot rods rumbled into town for the annual Yamba Rod Run static display in Yamba’s CBD. The Yamba Rod Run is organised each year by the north coast based Borderline Street Rodders Club. Event organiser Lewi Falzon said that each year the event gets bigger; attracting hot rods from around the country. “The first rod run took place 27 years ago with just seven cars, for a club weekend away,” Lewi said. “Last year we had 432 cars and this year we have 509,” he said. Hot rods of all descriptions lined Yamba and Coldstream streets in Yamba’s CBD, with a huge crowd turning out to check out and photograph the magnificent machines. “We’ve got cars here that might only be worth $1,500 and yet to the owners it’s worth $1,000,000 and then we’ve got cars here that the owners have spent $300,000 on,” Lewi said. “The business houses have been a wonderful support of the event, over the years. “If the people here didn’t help us it wouldn’t be as good; the bakeries, the butchers give us good deals and really look after us. The Bowling Club’s great as well as other business outlets. It’s been wonderful to have their support,” he said. “The Chamber of Commerce here love us – this is their busiest day of the year. “Most of the accommodation in town as well as the Blue Dolphin (Holiday Park) is booked out,” he said. During the course of the weekend the Borderline Street Rod Club raises money for different charities and worthwhile organisations, including the Lismore Base Hospital. The group are looking forward to returning once again in 2019.
