Yamba Minor Singles Championships

The club’s Minor Singles Championships got underway on Sunday with the first two rounds being contested with several of the club’s less experienced bowlers enjoying the challenge of singles play and making their way to next weekend’s quarterfinals.

Dave Beaumont continued his run of good form and will be up against Richard Skippings who managed to narrowly defeat Steve Grodzki and Steve Farrar in the earlier rounds. Dave Atkinson and Col Lindsay will go head-to-head with both having to overcome a Gunning on Sunday afternoon: Dave defeated Bob and Col defeated Chris.

Keith Hall and Tony Reynolds will square off after Keith defeated Don Freeman and Tony was too consistent for Don Lee. Keith Smith receives the ‘Houdini Award’ after his miraculous escape against Nev Hillyard. Keith was down and apparently labouring badly at 22 shots to six after 16 ends of play. However, from this point of the match onwards, it was if another bowler had stepped onto the green and the game took a total transformation. Keith, by winning 12 of the next 15 ends, took the game 31-29 in a display that had to be seen to be believed.

Keith will have the opportunity to further display his magical powers in the quarterfinals against Jake McHutchison, the Bowler of the Month for June, who continued his run of championship success.

Jake proved too good on the day for Richard Miller winning their match by 31-20.

The 2021 NSW State Pennant finals originally scheduled for the period July 16-18 have been rescheduled to September 9-12.

Yamba and Maclean will co-host the Grade 4 Pennant finals with all 16 New South Wales zones to be represented at the finals, bringing hundreds of players, officials and supporters to the district over the four-day period. The finals will commence with a practice session on Thursday afternoon by sectional play at both clubs on Friday and Saturday.

The finals will culminate with the top four zones competing in semi-finals and ultimately the final at the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club on Sunday September 12.

Men’s social bowls continues on Wednesday and Friday. All games commence at 1pm and nominations can be made by telephoning the bowls office on 6646 8669 or by recording participation details on the nomination sheet adjacent the bowls office prior to 11.30am on the intended day of play.
