Yamba Lions – Presidents Report

Since my last report, our Lions Club has had a very busy and a successful month.

The big event was the ‘Elvis’ movie fundraiser on June 23 that was organised by VP Joy. The day was extremely successful with over 100 people attending. The proceeds of this event, plus a donation from our Lions club, resulted in a donation of $5,000 being made to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter service which was publicly presented at the Bowling club.

Congratulation to VP Joy, Debbie from the Yamba Cinema, and all the Yamba Lions that helped make this an outstanding event. Our local rescue helicopter service really needs funds to help it recover from the damage caused by the recent floods at its Lismore base.

During July we ran Bingo over the four Mondays and had good attendance during the school holiday period.

The club also cooked and served pancakes at the Big4 Saltwater caravan park at Palmers Island. Many of our customers expressed their appreciation for our efforts (especially the hungry children!). A big thank you to all our Lions that volunteered their time and effort to make this 2-day activity a success.

The club “flew the flag’ by having a very visible presence with our new Gazebo at the Sunday Yamba River Markets on July 24. Although we only had a few enquires and gave out some Lions information packs, we still are looking for new members (unfortunately, we were not allowed to give out our helium balloons to the children due to the risk to the marine life).

We are now starting to get a list of people that just want to volunteer their time occasionally but not necessarily join a Lions Club. These volunteers are known as ‘Friends of Lions;’ please welcome them – they may become a Lion in the future.

Our meeting on July 28 was a fun social night that involved trying our hand at 10 pin bowls against our friends from the Yamba Rotary club. An enjoyable night was had by all.

On Friday July 29 our Lions provided the cooking service to the Yamba Public School to support their sports carnival.

Coming up next month in August, on Saturday 13, we intend to run our Lions Merry-Go-Round at Ford Park as part of the re-scheduled NAIDOC week celebrations. We need your help please!

Do you want to know what’s happening at our Lions Club? Beside this great monthly newsletter, you can also check out our new (up to date) “CLUB CALENDAR” on the Yamba Lions Club web site at:

As you may know the club voted to change to monthly meetings which will be held on the 4th Thursday of each month at 7pm for a 7.30pm start at the Yamba Bowling Club. The first monthly meeting will be held in August (Thursday 25th).

However, as an exception we will be holding an additional ‘special’ meeting on September 8 to welcome our new District Governor Rosalie Davis. Please come along to this special dinner meeting and show our Yamba hospitality.

I am looking forward to seeing you at our monthly meeting and please bring a friend along as a visitor to enjoy the company of our Lions pack.
