Last week, (starting June 24) was the Combined High Schools Golf Championships and the NSW All Schools Selection Trials and brought 100 skilled golfers to Yamba.
All in all, over 200 junior golfers and some family members were in town for the week, enjoying the hospitality of our Club and Yamba as a whole. Visitors and players, in many instances, showed their appreciation to those who gave of their time to help organise the smooth running of the event and the rest of us who were able to do spotting and offer accommodation etc. We must not to forget the most important contribution by our hard working superintendent and his staff who had the course wonderfully presented, only to be dumped on by the rainstorms, Sunday and all day Monday. The weather, however, improved to showers and winds during the week and our course proved to be a good test for the players.
The lady golfers gave their day to the juniors and played last Friday (June 28) and 43 ladies played a Single Stableford. Div 1 was won by Loraine Glock, continuing with her excellent form and had 37 points, on a very heavy course. Congratulations Loraine. Loraine has played a lot of golf in the New England of NSW over the years and it seems very possible she could return to her former glory. Runner up on the day was Jeannie Doolan 32 points. Div 2 was won by Gillian Holst on 30 points from Leigh Robertson. Verna Wright, having undertaken severe back surgery not too long ago, is making an amazing recovery, both with her health and her golf. Verna took out Div 3 on 29 points and Ann Schuhmacher on 27 points was r/up. Balls went to 26. Really, all players need to be commended for their participation on this day!
Regular sponsorship was as follows: Flots and Jets (3) – Sandra Wallace; Valley Finance (second on 3) – Di Sweetman; Peter Campbell Physiotherapy (second on 9) – Kathy Parker; Kitchen to Table (10) – Loraine Glock; Melt Massage and Beauty (12) – Sandra Wallace; Yamba Pharmacy (17) – Jeannie Doolan; Beachside Bargains (second on 17) – Di Sweetman.
Saturday 29 was very muddy, but the fine weather encouraged a few of us to have a game. Mary Hogan was winner again with 33 points and Gwynne Thomas hit a great shot to win the NTP.
Today the golfers are playing a 2 person Ambrose which is being sponsored by WG Northern Rivers.
