Yamba Bowlers compete in Zone One triples and fours

This week it was a more sedate week of bowls at the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club following the hustle and excitement of the State Pennant finals hosted by the club last week. Although the activity took a well earned respite, our bowlers were still kept busy, with the club represented at the Zone One Triples and Fours Championships contested at Brunswick Heads and Iluka. On Saturday the Yamba fours combination of Bill McDonald, Ray Schafer, Steve Kliendienst and Bruce Angel ventured to Iluka to challenge for the 2016 Zone One Senior Fours Championship. Ray was a substitute for the unavailable Mark Scobie. Bruce and his modified team were pitted against a talent quartet from Evans Head in a winner take all contest. Unfortunately, events did not go according to plan with the Yamba combination never really finding their rhythm while Evans Head quickly found their line and length to dominate the contest. The final score saw Evans Head win 28-7. The triples championship on Sunday was held at Brunswick Heads with the experienced Yamba trio of Allan Parker, Bob Ballantyne and Graham Meany keen to have an influence on the outcome of the Zone One Senior Triples Championship. The morning semi-final contest had the Yamba team up against Cabarita Beach. In a true test of skill and character the Yamba team eventually prevailed 21-20 to advance to the afternoon final. The final against Kyogle didn’t start as anticipated by the Yamba challengers, with the team quickly falling to an eight shot deficient early in the contest. However, the Yamba combination clawed their way back into the match before launching a stunning series of ends to eventually dominate the contest before capturing the mantle of Zone One Senior Triples Champions with an impressive 36-16 victory. Contrary to last week’s advice, the finals of the Men’s and Women’s Major/Minor Pairs Championships will not be contested on Sunday 14th August as Mark Scobie is unavailable when he teams with Graham Meany to contest the Zone One Senior Pairs Championships along with Martyn Wood and Alan Abbott in the Zone One Open Pairs Championship at Brunswick Heads on this day. An alternate date will be decided and advised as soon as possible. However the weekend still promises some outstanding bowls action at the club with the semi-finals and final of the men’s Minor Singles Championship and the quarter-finals and semi-finals of this year’s C Grade Singles Championships scheduled for Sunday 14th August. The Minor Singles is highlighted by two intriguing contests with the morning semi-finals featuring Bruce Blanch and Tom Cross locking horns while the evergreen Graeme Quick will do battle with the consistent Cliff Hinton. The C Grade Singles Championship allows the club’s less experienced bowlers the opportunity to display their talents and skills developed so far. The C Grade Championship quarter-finals will commence at 9am with the semi-finals scheduled to be played at 1pm. The next Travelling Bowler’s activity is a reciprocal visit to Yamba by the Park Beach Pirates on Sunday 28th August. Participation sheets will be placed at the main bowl’s notice board. The club will also host an RSL Social Bowls Day on Monday 5th September; the participation sheet is on the notice board and non-RSL members are invited to participate. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names need to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play. All nominations are guaranteed a game and visitors are most welcomed. Results from last week are: Wednesday 3rd August: Winners: Col Cohen and Noel Charles. Runners-Up: Denis Ford and Stuart Bell. Consolation: Tom Cross and Ray Schafer. Thursday 5th August: Winners: John Parkinson, Alan Reed and John Luchetti. Runners-Up: Bryan Johns, Rob Milesi and Stuart Bell.
