Women’s Golf Grafton

Our touring ladies returned home from the annual Women’s Golf Northern Rivers Tournament completely exhausted after a fabulous three days of golfing, wining, dining and shoe shopping. President Heather, captain Noeline, Jan P, Peg, Marilyn, Janette, Chrissy, Anna and Julie all tried their very best on the always challenging but glorious Casino Golf Course with the first two days being stroke rounds. Perhaps it was the slickness of the greens or the pure skill of the Maclean ladies that enabled them, together with our other Lower River golfing friends from Yamba, to collect a vast array of silverware and prizes at the presentation of trophies on the Tuesday night for their fine results. Congratulations girls and thanks for being our entertaining neighbours. The Ballina, Casino and Ocean Shores players were also big winners on the night. Ballina’s Fay Riddell had a great three days when she was a winner twice (36 holes and foursomes) over the tournament. Grafton’s star was a very excited and thrilled Anna Bidstrup as the lucky recipient of a nearest to the pin. Cheryl, Kay E, Val, Royer, Janeen, Lyn and Sue P travelled to Casino on the Wednesday to compete in the foursomes for the final day’s event. Janeen and Lyn were the clever ones for Grafton that day when they received a ball for their efforts. This Tournament has been running for over 80 years and the committee of Women’s Golf Northern Rivers are to be congratulated for the huge task of organising such a wonderful tournament. We are all looking forward to next year’s event which is to be held in Grafton. Last Wednesday’s home event attracted 43 starters for the Stableford competition which saw Soo McPherson blast the opposition off the course to come in as the overall winner of the day with a fantastic 38pts. This win for Soo came on the back of her great win the previous Friday with 39pts. Congratulations Soo on two tremendous games, however we sense that the “Two Marys’” with their sharp pens maybe on to you! The Div 1 winner on Wednesday was Dot Newton with 32pts c/b from Millie Harris and Dell Burke was 3rd on 28. Div 2 saw Robyn Wilkes (who appears eager to take Shirley A’s place in Div 1) back in the winner’s circle on 31 with Cathy Jones 2nd on 29 c/b from Fay Shields. Jan Davis came in as the winner of Div 3 with 32 on a c/b from Jan Hamilton and Liz Smith was 3rd on 31pts. The ladies on Friday must have been put off by the bleak morning and sprinkling of showers as only 17 players entered the Stableford event. Jan Davis continued her winning streak for the week to come in as the winner on 33pts. Marg Manahan was 2nd on 30 and Peg James placed 3rd on 28. Another small field of only eight players participated in the stableford event last Saturday. Courtney Fuller once again produced a consistent round to come in as the winner on 34pts. Sonya was the winner (D.O.C.) for the NTP on the 6th. A few of our ladies have entered into the Iluka Open Day on Monday next, 5 August, and we wish these ladies safe travel and good golfing.
