Ukettes gear up for Grafton festival

The Grafton Ukettes are tightening their strings in preparation for their upcoming Ukulele Festival in May. The event will be held at the South Grafton Services Club on May 13-14 and is bound to be a lot of fun. The theme for the weekend is 1950’s and 1960’s rock and roll music and dancing, with the dress code to match. Many groups from outside the Clarence Valley are planning to travel to Grafton for the fun event. The Grafton Ukettes began in 2011 and was started by two friends Colleen Herbert and Pauline Wake. The women teamed up to play their ukuleles together and called themselves ‘The Ukettes’. As the group grew in numbers they started meeting at the Criterion Theatre in Oliver Street, Grafton. The group has now grown to over 70 members and meets every Monday [at a cost of $3 a head – which covers the cost of the venue and morning tea], at the theatre from 10am to around 12.30. The Ukettes are often asked to perform at the residential aged care facilities and they always put on a fun show for the residents. Their motto is ‘fun’ and definitely not taking yourself too seriously. New members are always welcome and for any further information about joining the group or the upcoming Ukulele Festival, please contact: Madge – anglia1@bigpond.com or through their facebook page – Grafton Ukulele Festival – Grafton Uke Hop.
