The last of YWBC…but there is better to come

Life Members Day for Yamba

A day to honour our valued Life Members Shirley Drum and Lyn Olsson – with a morning of bowls with prize monies as always donated by these wonderful ladies; 28 bowlers took to the greens vying for a piece of the action.

The morning bowls commenced with a “Spider” with prizes won by those with their bowl finishing closest to the target on the green. And those clever bowlers with early touchers were also rewarded in the morning games.

Following the morning games of triples and one game of pairs, winning players were selected randomly and received a cash prize.

Then it was on to the second part of this special day. Special because we not only celebrated the usual lunch with our Life Members, but we also celebrated the days past of Yamba Women’s Bowling Club – i.e., virtually a “wake” for our Club as we know it. Established in 1937 the Club has been a source of great pleasure for many, many local women and also a source of triumphs and defeats over the years. We have brought home many Pennant flags and even State flags – to the great pride of our Club. With the YWBC flag flying women have enjoyed days of friendship with their fellow members and welcomed many guests from visiting Clubs over the years and always taken pride all we had to offer visitors – with great greens and wonderful facilities and always a warm welcome for all. And now those days have past, and we now look forward to continuing our competition and camaraderie but just with a new moniker – YBC – amalgamated with our men’s club.

Our women’s bowls days and competitions will continue as it has in the past with the exciting new addition of ‘Open Bowls’ – combined with the men bowlers.

Thanks must go to all those who contributed to the success of YWBC over the years – the Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and Committee Members, Selectors, Match and Social Committees – putting in countless hours of meetings and preparations for events at the Club.

And congratulations and good wishes to the new incoming administration.

Bob and Wendy Ballantyne again constructed a wonderful screen presentation of days gone by – and many memories we reawakened. Especially for our guests – bowlers from years gone by who hadn’t rolled a bowl in many years but had never lost their interest in the Club and looked forward to the women’s bowls news in our wonderful ‘Independent’ newspaper who has published our weekly columns for many years.

It was so wonderful to see those faces again – familiar to many of us – just for this very special occasion. Even past Secretary – Jan Funnell – travelled from Queensland to be with us on this auspicious occasion.

The current Committee will celebrate the end of YWBC Committee with a McDonald’s breakfast as a tilt to the loyal support we have enjoyed over the past years.

Thank you must also go to our many past sponsors – especially Yamba Bowling Club, Palm Lake Resort, Coulter Seafoods and many others too numerous to mention but none the less appreciated.

So, after this week we will turn the corner leaving YWBC behind with all the wonderful memories and of course retaining with great care the records and photos of the past to look back and remember.
