Under murky skies, Bill McDonald, Mark Scobie, Bruce Angel and Steve Kliendienst and the combination of Allan Parker, Trevor Bardsley, Bob Ballantyne and Graham Meany lit up the Yamba ‘greens’ with a radiant display of team lawn bowls in the final of the Major Fours Championship held on Saturday afternoon. The vast throng of spectators were treated to a mesmerising exhibition of lawn bowls that left most amazed at what they had just witnessed. Predictably, the contest was close and after nine entertaining ends Steve Kliendienst and his posse held a slender one shot lead (10 – 9). The pattern of play continued and at the conclusion of 18 ends the scores were locked together at 17 shots each. Steve again rallied his troops and appeared to have all but secured the victory by winning the next two ends to take a four shot advantage into the 21st and final end. However, the experienced quartet of Allan Parker, Trevor Bardsley, Bob Ballantyne and Graham Meany were not about to give up without a fight and channelled their collective efforts into capturing the four shots necessary to force the match into an extra ‘sudden death’ end. Displaying nerves of steel and in front of a spectator group too fixated to move, Graham and the ‘Rat Pack’ did one better and somehow managed a miraculous five shots to take the match and the championship 22 – 21.
