After a year without live theatre, the Pelican Playhouse is proud to present their first production of 2021, Stories in the Dark, a moving celebration of the power of stories to sustain us during difficult times.
From acclaimed Australian playwright, Debra Oswald comes the story of Tomas, a terrified young boy who finds himself alone in a war-torn city. Enter Anna, a feisty, independent, sixteen-year-old, who is initially resentful of Tomas’ presence. The two youngsters strike up an unlikely friendship, taking refuge in their makeshift home, as civil war rages around them. Young actors Sonny McCutcheon and Whitney Moon make their theatrical debut at the Pelican, bringing the two lead characters to life with enthusiasm and spirit.
To escape the terror and struggle of their reality, Tomas and Anna tell one another a series of folk tales. The stories contain a world of colorful characters: ogres, kings, heroes, dragons, and wolves. And as the stories are told, a talented ensemble of actors brings them to life on stage. Experienced performers Acacia Endean, Gabrielle Andrews, and Angela Clarke are joined by newcomers to the Pelican, Oskar Robertson, Emily Schroder, and Kiya Rush in this journey through this magical world.
Stories in the Dark conveys the fundamental need for friendship and hope in a world of darkness. If you have ever found solace in a story, then you will not want to miss Stories in the Dark.
