Ricochet champion Peter Martin bombs out at Coutts croquet

The final positions of the Ricochet Championship were reversed on Tuesday. Champion Peter Martin came last after being demolished by Louise Lowe 14-10 and by Rusty Case 9-5. Louise had the best day of her career; adding a 12-10 victory over Gillian Martin.

In AC, while Ann and Tony Williams enjoyed intensive training, the first match in the AC 2020 Championship threw up a surprise when Sue Deeth defeated Peter Deeth 20-19 with a golden hoop after the buzzer.

At the weekend another Championship game saw Simon Cook struggle to beat Gillian Martin 19-13 while Peter Martin had a victory over the Deeths 20-12.

In Golf Croquet we give a warm welcome back to Betty Taylor, playing her first game on our lawns for almost five years, and showing she has not lost her skills. Sheila Foley was back after illness and immediately hit a hoop to hoop. Later Ken Davison did the same. Nobody won all their matches but Phil Jordan and Ann Williams had identical records, four big wins and a huge loss. Yvonne Gillett was close behind and in all 17 games yielded 178 hoops run.

Thursday was eventful. Two charming visitors from Toronto, Peter and Merle Saunders, had several wins between them. Nobody had all victories, but pride of place goes to Eric Wheeler, a spectacular, and rare, Dambuster jump shot from 4-metres. Ken Davison also had a jump shot to loud acclaim. There were two 7-0 whitewashes: Robyn Walters inflicted one and was on the wrong end of the other. In their final games for six weeks the Brodies signed off. Jan had a fine win, Keith had four losses: we shall miss his hard hit shots and the clang of his ball thumping into the clubhouse.
