Oppressive conditions make for hard going at 400 yards

Some (more sensible) members made the wise decision to give the 400 yard shoot a miss, in the dangerously oppressive conditions last Saturday, and a couple more pulled out at the half-way mark, as the temperature on the open range soared into the 40’s and the humidity approached the 100% mark. (Only mad dogs and riflemen lie out in the mid-day sun)! Those that contested this, the second round of the Summer Cup, were faced with the sweltering conditions, thick mirage and a difficult northerly wind. Nevertheless some good scores were recorded on the day. The only “possible” recorded went to Dennis Hilton [T/R division] in his first stage. He came close again in his second stage, dropping just the one point, as he raced to a Top Off-Rifle score of 99/100 which also gave him the Daily Aggregate in this division. Peter Nielsen, Matt Bloomer and Wayne Pearson filled out the other places. In F-Class, Mark Millard came home with a blistering 59/60 in his second stage to take the Daily Aggregate in this division with the full 120/120 for the day and put the pressure right on John Black for Off-Rifle honours. However John had a brilliant shoot in the trying conditions to record a 59/60 with seven right in the central X-Ring, and followed it up with a 57/60 with five X’s in his second stage to see off the rest of the competition and record 116/120 with a total of twelve X’s. A truly magnificent effort in these conditions. T/R Scores: Dennis Hilton 50-6 49-2 99-8 0.5 99.5; Mathew Bloomer 48-3 48-3 96-6 1.0 97.0; Wayne Pearson 49-6 43-0 92-6 4.5 96.5; Peter Nielsen 48-3 48-4 96-7 0.5 96.5; Luke Bloomer 47-6 47-3 94-9 1.5 95.5; Rob Durrington 43-2 41-0 84-2 9.0 93.0; Ian Griffiths 43-3 ret. 43-3 1.5 44.5.
