Four rowers from the Lower Clarence Rowing Club, Gemma Dane, Crystal Piper, Teagan McFarlane and Clara Samms travelled to New Zealand recently with the Commercial Rowing Club (Brisbane) to compete in the Waikato Christmas Regatta held at Cambridge on Lake Karapiro. Piper and Samms joined up with Commercial Rowing Club to form U17 and U16 crews while Dane and McFarlane combined with two girls from St. Peters (Cambridge) to battle out the Club quad scull race to win their heat and place 5th in the A final. That’s not all, with Dane taking on the Senior single scull and placed 6th in the A final. She then joined up with local rower McFarlane to place 4th in their Women’s Club double scull final. While the younger girls made the A and B finals, Piper was placed 5th in her U18 B final single scull, 2nd in the U17B final double scull and 2nd in the U17B final quad scull. Samms had a win in the Novice double scull and 2nd in the U16 quad scull. The competition was stiff with the N.Z. High Performance Centre located on the course which meant that their Olympic rowers took part in the regatta as well. Overall the girls did exceedingly well despite the gale-force winds and teeming rain which didn’t hold them back! Congratulations to them all on a wonderful effort and achieving such good results. The girls would also like to thank their coaches Keryn Saunders and Harold Kratz for putting in the time and effort and Peter Toon from Commercial for organising the trip.
