Nymboida fires 5 years on

Lynne Mowbray

Last Friday November 8, marked exactly five years since the horrific fires which ravaged the village of Nymboida, in which 90 homes were destroyed.

Time may have passed, but behind the flourishing vegetation covering the blackened landscape, are those who remain and are trying to rebuild their village and their lives.

Nymboida Camping and Canoeing Inc, Secretary Ros Cooper said that her home was one of the 10 homes in Frickers Road, Nymboida, that were lost in the fire.

Ros and a band of local volunteers are doing everything they can to not only maintain and improve the Nymboida Camping and Canoeing grounds, but also give back to the place that gave so much to them, in the aftermath of the fire.

‘The Big Shed’ which became the Recovery Hub and home for the community, RFS and Blaze Aid volunteers after the fire, received a $200,000 grant from the government in 2020, which allowed them to upgrade the facilities and install a commercial grade kitchen.

The Wagtail Café has now opened to the public and serves up quality coffee and freshly baked goodies and provides a meeting place not only for the locals to catch up for a coffee and a chat, but also to travellers, campers and passers-by.

If you’d like to help support the community, why not take a day trip out to Nymboida and grab some lunch or a coffee and cake or grab the family and enjoy the 14-hectare camping grounds on the beautiful Goolang Creek.
