Numbers holding up at Grafton men’s golf

Another outstanding field took to the Grafton Golf Club fairways last Saturday with a capacity field of 104 starters teeing it up in the Anzac Day Cromack Transport 18-hole single Stableford.

All players to their credit, observed the social distancing requirements, playing in groups of two and at the same time keeping their distance apart. The star player for the day was John Tracey (7) who completed his round with a good score of 41 points, two points clear of his nearest rivals on a course which is improving every day. The course is in fantastic condition and is a credit to our outdoor staff and volunteers who put the effort in.

Three players finished with 39 points: Dennis Pye (13), David Morgan (10) and John Thompson (6). Dennis and David were awarded the win and runner-up spots respectively in B Grade, with John declared the winner of A Grade from Simon Loadsman (5) with 38.  A countback decided the C Grade results, with both Wayne Creighton (17) and Neville Henwood (16) both finishing on 37 with Wayne eventually declared the winner of that grade.

nly a couple of weeks ago, Mitch Rose and Ron Baker were declared the winner and runner-up respectively in a D Grade competition and on Saturday those results were reversed with Ron (24) gaining the advantage over Mitch (24) with 37 points to Mitch’s 36.

From the 10 players who recorded 34 points, only two were awarded with a pro-ball, together with those on 35 or better.

Last Thursday a great field of 66 starters enjoyed outstanding weather conditions which resulted in a close contest with three players taking out the top three spots with a score of 40 points.

Following the countback process Ron Hockey (14) was declared the winner from Dwayne Doyle (17) and Grant Rickwood (1) being awarded the 2nd runner-up positions.

Pro-balls went down to all those with 34 or better.

On the preceding Tuesday, 96 players challenged the course with the score again achieving a high standard. Graeme Lynn (20) was a dominate winner with 43 points against his name.  He was followed by Geoff Crispin (15) and Jake Frame (plus one), both recording 40 points. Pro-balls going down to all those golfers with 33 or better.

With capacity fields being achieved on almost every day of competition, organisers have resolved to reduce the tee off times back to six-minute intervals from the 10-minute separation, which currently applies. This action will enable a greater number of players to get a game as not all those wanting a game can be accommodated. The two player per group condition will remain in place until such time Golf NSW and State authorities relax those conditions. Any player unable to secure a start on any competition day should contact Mark Harvison (phone 6642 5413) who may be able to find a spot for you should any nominated player withdraw for any reason.

Grafton Veteran golfers continue to turn out in impressive numbers with many attempting to qualify for the Coopers Brewery Top Gun shootout.

Only 10 players will qualify for the shootout final, which is scheduled for Sunday October 11, obviously still plenty of opportunity exists to make that final. Leading the qualifiers currently is Graeme Lynn with 43 points. He is followed by Chris Wheelahan 41, then Dek Pabian on 40. They are followed by Bob Fish 39, Nick Abraham 38, Dennis Pye and Graeme Smith 37, Wayne Creighton 36, with John Dougherty and David Morgan completing the current top 10 places on 35. As mentioned, still plenty of time to qualify, going on past results a score from low to mid 40’s will be required if you are to make the grade.

Following on from the 9-hole mixed medley held two or three Sundays ago, a 2nd medley event has been organised for this coming Sunday, as well as on Mother’s Day, May 10.  Nominations must be made online, and tee times will be available from 11am through to 1pm. The competition will then be held on a fortnightly basis from then on. Whilst ever that support continues.
