Two students from Grafton Public School have received District Awards for their outstanding results in the 2022 Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.

One of the longest running mathematics competitions for Year 5 and Year 6 students in the country, the annual event was first held in 1981.

This year, more than 16000 students from over 300 NSW schools participated in the online competition, and without the aid of calculators, rulers, or other mathematical instruments, were given 45 minutes to complete 35 questions aimed at testing their numeracy and problem-solving skills.

Finishing just behind the top three in the state, Year 5 student Maximus Coorey and Year 6 student Nafis Alam were among 49 recipients of the District Award in 2022.

Assistant Branch Manager of Newcastle Permanent in Grafton Patricia Hyatt presented the students with their awards and a complimentary $50 prize during a special ceremony and afternoon tea at the local store on September 21 and said they should be extremely proud of their achievements.

“They were very excited to receive their awards and prizes,” she said.

“They performed so well against 16000 other students which is a massive achievement.”

Through the years, several local primary school students have excelled in the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.

“It is amazing to have so many talented mathematicians in the Clarence Valley,” Ms Hyatt said.
