Naval & Mariners Association – Clarence Valley Inc.

Sunday December 8 saw a good turnout of members for the Christmas luncheon, this year at the Maclean Hotel. We dined in style, with a full buffet of cold cuts, salads and inclusive of prawns and oysters followed by a good old seaman’s “duff!” Our sincere thanks to “Mine Hosts”, Jack and Monique, the bar and catering staff. The courtesy bus was provided to get us to the hotel and return home afterwards, safely.

The Association’s first gathering for 2020,  will be Monday February 10, the 56th anniversary of the loss of 82 officers and sailors, when the Daring Class destroyer, HMAS Voyager came into collision with the aircraft-carrier, HMAS Melbourne off Jervis Bay and was cut in two. A short memorial service and wreath-laying will be held at the Maclean Cenotaph commencing at 1100, followed by our meeting at the Maclean Hotel scheduled for 1130 and at the completion of the meeting, “scran”.

A new member to our ranks is Jim Gilvear, a former Australian merchant seaman together with his wife, Robyn. Both were welcomed at the Christmas luncheon. We invite all former and serving sailors who served in the RAN, RNZN, RN and allied navies, merchant seamen who served with the Australian Merchant Marine and allied merchantmen, those who served on Army small ships and water-transport, RAAF crash boat crews, Water Police, Maritime Services and Customs (sea-going) and other government agencies who served at sea. Our motto, “At sea we served” tells all and our annual membership fee is $10. For further information contact Roger Jones, email [email protected] or by mobile phone 0498 150 627.

Thank you, and we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020; from the committee & ships-company of Clarence Valley Inc, Naval & Mariners Association.
