Renowned Angourie surfer, filmmaker, and artist Monty Webber is inviting locals and visitors to the Clarence Valley to enjoy a pre-Christmas surfing film screening and a post New Years art exhibition ‘Glitching Out’ showcasing his work.

Monty told the CV Independent he was inspired to show his short surfing films and artworks after being invited to Sydney in October to screen his films.

“In October 2024 I was invited to show a retrospective short surfing films at the Bondiwood Film Festival in Sydney,” he said.

Monty said his first foray into surfing films was in the early 70’s.

“I started making Super 8 home surfing movies with his older brothers, John and Greg, 50 years ago in 1974,” he said.

From there Monty went on to produce and direct many surfing films for surf wear brands including O’Neill and Hot Tuna.

In the early ‘90s Monty photographed and edited the Sarge’s Surfing Scrapbook series; the first surf video magazine in the world.

“In 2004 I won an international cinematography award for the Avant Garde short surfing film Liquid Time, I and my brother Greg filmed in the Lower Clarence; a four-minute edit of which appears in the show,” he said.

After the success of the festival and the feedback he received about his films, Monty said they will be screened on December 20 at Yamba.

“I will be screening the Retrospective at Wooli Street Hall, behind Yamba Library, on Friday December the 20th at 6pm,” he said.

Monty will also screen two of his award-winning surfing documentary shorts, Journey On (2013) and Tsunami Brothers (2019).

“Some of the surfers featured riding the waves of Angourie and Yamba include Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Dave Rastovich and as well as many locals,” he said.

Tickets for the 80-minute Retrospective how which starts at 6pm are $10 cash, payable at the door.

Then in January, Monty’s creative talent will again be on display in his exhibition ‘Glitching Out’ at the Old Kirk Gallery, next to Yamba Museum on River Street Yamba.

Featuring an exhibition of recent drawings and paintings predominantly done during 2024, the art exhibition will be launched at 5.30pm on Friday, January 10.

Monty will also be selling his new collection of short science fiction stories, ‘Glitching Out’, at the exhibition opening on January 10th.
