The ‘Show Us Your Mo’ jam session fundraiser for the Movember Foundation was a “fantastic event”, says freshly-shorn Richelle Steveley. Team 372Maclean, from Maclean’s Fire and Rescue Brigade, hosted the event at and with the support of the Maclean Hotel on Saturday November 26. The main motivation for the event, says brigade crew member Richelle, was her experience of both her father and brother suffering from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression – her brother ultimately took his own life in 2009. “I have always wanted to host an event like this, to raise awareness and money for all of our men doing it tough, especially those that are on their own and for those who have that old school mentality of ‘I’ll be right, I’m a man, nothing gets me down’. “It’s not healthy fellas, you really need to start speaking up and to just remember that you’re not alone and that there is help. “Next year we would like to see some of our other local emergency services employees take the challenge and grow a mo or even shave your head – join in the fun and raise awareness and money for men’s health, I definitely think you guys are worth looking after.” Team 372Maclean and FRNSW Maclean 372 Station would like to thank the following businesses for their support and donations: Maclean Hotel, Maclean Toy Kingdom, Spar Maclean, Gail’s Gift’s, Stanfords Pharmacy, Kane’s Sport, Maclean Variety Meats, Bad Habits Tobacconist, Maclean Gifts and Sweets, Maclean Discount Pharmacy, Hooked on Seafood and Maclean Cellars. “The event raised a whopping $2,316, with online donations still to come in,” says Richelle. The mo competition consisted of three divisions, Best Mo, Best Look-a-like and Best Moaty (Mo/Goaty); all winners received a prize from either Maclean Toy Kingdom or Stanfords Pharmacy.
