Swimmers from 22 clubs from all over Australia competed last weekend in the Clarence River Masters annual carnival in Yamba. Despite inclement conditions there were some standout performances across all age divisions and featuring many of our own Clarence competitors. Highlights included: First place for Erla McGregor, Leonie Daley, and Tony Hayman; also featuring in the top finishers were David Abrahams, Sarah Daley, Jane Lawrence, Jim Wheeler, and Bobbie Winger. Congratulations to all of the Clarence Masters team that swam competitively, and combined to host a fabulous carnival. Among the visitors 88-year-old, Bill Walker from the Novocastrian club in Newcastle, impressed in all his events; Bill has been swimming for sixteen years and will attend the World Masters Championships in Budapest in August, so he was keen for the race practise. Bill’s clubmate, Malcolm Harrison aged 87, placed equal second with David Abrahams in a very competitive division. At the presentation dinner, club president, Jane Lawrence, made particular mention of the officials who contributed their time and expertise to the event. Jane Noake – President of NSW Masters; Mark Hepple – state recorder, State Member of the Year, and recently awarded, Life Member of NSW Masters; Dennis Moore from Cessnock – carnival referee and a keen supporter of Clarence Masters for over twenty years from its beginnings in Grafton.
