Maclean Vets Golf Club ‘Week of Golf’

Maclean Veteran’s Golf Club hosted a week long tournament during mid July which saw 140 players enjoying our beautiful golf course and local area. Competition was fierce for the 36 hole NSWVGA shield as well as the 36 hole Scratch event both for men and women. Winner of the 36 hole event for men was Vern Roberts from Muree with 77 points and for the ladies our own Sue Fong Kee with 66 points. Winner of the Scratch event for men was Maclean’s Geoff Greenwood with 46 points and Christine Maher from Maryborough taking the ladies event with 26 points. Vets President Bob Harvey congratulated the winners and also thanked his organising committee as well as the many volunteers who helped out during the tournament. “The course was in magnificent condition thanks to our hard working ground staff and volunteer workers” Bob said. He also thanked out going Tournament Director Bruce Walsh for all his hard work in getting the Maclean Week of Golf up and running so well during the four years Bruce has been Tournament Director. “Bruce has done a great job setting all of this up from scratch, this is one of the most popular events in NSW and one which brings players into our club and area at a traditionally slow time of year. We use our Scottish heritage here in Maclean to make our tournament different, we have a piper play at registration day and continue the theme throughout the week.” Bob announced that Maclean Golf Club Captain Geoff Grayson would take over the helm from next year and is assured the tournament will be in very good hands. A heat wave on Tartan Friday, where all our players are encouraged to dress themselves or their gear in tartan, saw layers being peeled off from the beginning of our early morning shot gun start. Everyone got into the spirit of things and some fabulous outfits were seen around the course. Our caterer Shelley provided a delicious roast for lunch and the players enjoyed a very sociable presentation event during the afternoon. Raffles throughout the week and a bulls eye on the 11th hole on Friday raised funds which will be donated to the Maclean Hospital Auxiliary, these will be put towards many things the hospital needs to help our community. Maclean Vets would like to thank our generous sponsors who made our 2016 Week of Golf such a success.
