Maclean RSL Sub-branch

RSL Anzac essay competition

The annual Harry Lang memorial essay competition run by the Maclean RSL Sub-branch is open to all students in Maclean, Townsend, Gulmarrad, Lawrence, Chatsworth Island, Iluka and Harwood. Conducted each year to raise awareness of Anzac Day and to remember the sacrifice of Australian service people, the competition offers a total of $800 in prizes for the best essays in the junior, middle and senior school divisions.

Maclean Sub-branch president Steve Walton said: “the disruption caused by COVID last year meant that the number of essays was down, but the quality has remained consistently high. We expect to receive more than 100 entries this year as students reflect on what servicemen and women have endured to defend the peace and freedom that is sometimes taken for granted”.

The essay competition is named for Harry Lang who was a WWII serviceman and member of the Maclean RSL. School principals have been contacted with details of the competition which closes on 17th April with winners announced on Anzac Day.
