Local ‘Superbike’ rider stays in contention
Last weekend local Supersport rider, Luke Mitchell, travelled north to Queensland Raceway to compete in the 4th round of the Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship.
Still recovering from the crash at Mallala which left him with 2 fractured vertebrae, Luke was feeling confident to achieve a top ten result. Qualifying in start position 8 for the first race in Saturday’s Championship (the FX Australian Superbike Championship), with a personal best time of 113.290, Luke was feeling confident going into to Saturday. The day went well with Luke finishing with two 8th place finishes and a 6th in the overall results, giving him 8th place overall and equal 3rd in B Grade. All in all a good days racing and a personal best time in every race, and moving back up the ladder into the top ten in the series.
Luke’s times from Saturday placed in him in position 8 for the entire day in Sunday’s Australasian Superbike Championship. The weather report had predicted the possibility of showers throughout the day, so Luke had to prepare for both fine and wet weather but by lunch time it was evident that the rain wasn’t coming. With less than a second a lap between 1st and 10th place, there were some awesome battles throughout the day with all of the top 10 keeping with the front group for most of the day. Luke managed two 7th place finishes and an 8th, giving him a 6th place in the overall points and 3rd in B Grade. Luke was very pleased with the results for the weekend, especially with the fact that on Sunday he dropped even more time off his personal time getting down to 1.12.853.
