Lions Club call out to save Brooms Head fun run

Despite last week’s dismal weather, the sun shone for the running of this year’s annual Lions Club Brooms Head fun run, on Sunday. Despite the excellent conditions, the event saw a drop in competitor numbers. Maclean Lions Club member Laurie Fitzpatrick attributed the lack of numbers, to the amount of rain which fell across the valley, in the lead up to this year’s event. “I think the inclement weather dampened the enthusiasm,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. “We’ve had up to 100 competitors in previous years, compared to 26 this year.” Mr Fitzpatrick said that the Lions Club were also down on members to help run this year’s event. “We have 10 members away this weekend, so it was just down to a few of us to run the event. “We are desperately in need of more members or our long term events [like the fun run and the Australia Day Billy Cart Derby] will be curtailed, as we don’t have the man power to run them. “We’re not getting any younger; I’m 67 and I’m one of the young ones. “We need more members.”
