Lawrence Rodeo turns up the heat

Maclean Showground was the place to be on Friday 27 December, for the annual running of the Lawrence Rodeo.

Organisers said that they were happy with this year’s event, despite the hot temperature on the day.

“It would have been great if it was a little bit cooler, but we had a good crowd,” said one of committee members.

“It wasn’t the biggest, but it was definitely on a par with other years,” he said.

“The numbers for the rodeo events, entry wise, were pretty good too.

This year we had the mini bull’s events for the under 15s and under 12s, which was very popular, and we had 10 kids enter in one of the age groups, and about 15 in the other.

The Op-Shop Barrel Race is becoming more and more popular. There’s been a few other rodeos that have run this (event), and the crowd really seems to get involved in it and the competitors as well. They are getting more and more creative with their outfits.

The event was won by 7-year-old Cody Want, in his ‘Bumble Bee’ outfit and he won $400 for that, and he’s already told us that he’s not sharing!

The Op-Shop Barrel Race is actually classed an adult event, but it’s not restricted to an age. Obviously, an adult would probably win on the time aspect of the event, because it’s in two parts – time and best outfit.  So, it’s $600 for the fastest run and $400 for the best dressed.

The best-dressed winner is chosen by the crowd, by their applauds and cheers,” they said.

Each year, the money raised by the Lawrence Rodeo Committee from the running of the rodeo, goes back to the community clubs and charities etc that help out with the running of the event. Last years event raised $25,000, which was distributed back to the community groups.
