Ladies make finals in weekly Grafton swim events

Before competition commenced last week, President Steve welcomed back Bruce Durrington and Karlie Cleaver, both having their first swim for the winter season.

Steve also announced the results of the July point score.

In 5th place on 40 points was Terry Marsh, 4th place went to Steve Donnelly who accrued 44 points. On 45 points and taking third place was Geoff Simkus. Numbers jumped a little after this and on 58 points, Damien O’Mahony scored second place and on an outstanding score of 67, David Moon scooped the pool and took out the T. & S. Classic trophy for the month.

It was wonderful to see the ladies make some finals this week.

Yvonne Shorrock made it through to the 25m sprint final along with Richard Sear, Steve Donnelly and David Moon.

In an extremely close finish, Yvonne touched just ahead of Richard, but bad news awaited them. Both had broken their times by the smallest of margins – Yvonne by .03 and Richard by .01.

These disqualifications boosted Moony onto the winning podium and along with the win he received the Stephen Donnelly Explosive Cup. Steve himself had to be content with second place.

It didn’t take Bruce Durrington long to get back into the swing of things, making the 50m final with fellow club mates Toni Ensbey, Terry Marsh and Damien O’Mahony.

Toni, with a very generous handicap was first to hit the water and had almost reached the 25m mark before the lads took chase.

At the finish line the water was awash as all four swimmers stretched out to touch the tiles.

Only a second separated them but a check on times had Bruce breaking by .50 and Marshy by .01.

Damien, swimming a smart time was awarded the win and Toni, pleased with her time, was placed second.

Marshy, making it a habit of reaching two finals one after the other, remained in the water after the 50m as he then had to compete in the 25m B B & B event.

The other two contestants, hoping that Marshy may have used up some of his reserves, were Karlie Cleaver and Geoff Simkus.

However, this was not to be, Marshy covered the 25m in perfect time, taking the win with Geoff in second and Karlie third.
