Knox combination claim Grafton Services Club Fours title for 2022

Saturday February 5 saw the staging of our Club Fours Championship final for 2022.

The two teams to do battle were Barry Elder, Garry Harrison, Robby Power and Allan Knox (Skip) who took on Bob Tierney, Ken Foster, Craig Dalton and Tony Dalton (Skip).

Allan & team took the early advantage to lead 5 – 0 after the first two ends and held this advantage through the first half of the game to lead 11 – 5 at the halfway mark. Tony and team scored singles on the 11th and 13th ends; however, this was matched by Knoxy’s men with three shots on the 12th end for Knoxy to lead 14 – 7 with eight ends to play.

From this point on Tony’s boys were only able to manage two more singles as Knox and team ran away with the Major Fours title for 2022.  Congratulations to Allan and team and well-done Tony and his boys for qualifying for the final.

Final score: Allan Knox 21 d Tony Dalton 9.

Saturday February 5 also saw the staging of our district (now called Zone 1 South) Champion of Champions Pairs event for 2022.

Maclean Bowling Club was the venue for this competition in which our club was represented by our current pairs’ champions Mark Andrews and Mark Walsh.

In their first-round match, our ‘Double Marks’ were up against the ever-consistent Brooms Head duo of Reg Austin and Steve (Sparra) Coley.

After a close encounter throughout, the “Double Marks” eventually prevailed for a close 2 shot victory 22 shots to 20, which earned our boys a place in the semi final the following day.

In the semi final the ‘Double Marks’ came up against the Maclean pairs champions of John Nash and Jason Pinnock, and although our boys aquitted themselves very well they found the Maclean duo on their home green just too good on the day.

Final score: John Nash & Jason Pinnock 24 d Mark Andrews & Mark Walsh 14.

Bad luck boys, but a great effort to make the semi finals of a district competition.

The Maclean boys went on to defeat the Yamba pairs champions Col Lindsay and Graham Meany in the final, to be crowned the district ‘Champion of Champions’ Pairs winners…. congratulations to the Maclean boys.

In club championship results, last weekend February 12 our Major Singles began with twelve first round matches being played.

On Wednesday February 9 we had 36 players for our social pairs with the winners, Brian Buckley and Paul Sutton; runners up were Garry Coleman and Laurie Preston, and the lucky losers were Bob Gardner and Matty Shorten…how did that happen “little brother”?  lol.

The first resting toucher for the day was won by Bob Gardiner.

On Friday February 11 we had 34 players keen to ‘roll them down’ in our social pairs and our winners for the day were Ivan Beverley and Harold Gibson; runners- up went to Norm Simpson and Barry Elder (and a big welcome back to Norm Simpson after a few years out of the game with knee problems). Our consolation prize went to Terry Glass and Garry Gumbleton.
